There Are Now 74 Million Peeps Playing "Minecraft" Every Month

Do you play Minecraft? Yeah, you and 74 million other people.

Microsoft’s new Minecraft boss Helen Chiang has revealed in an interview with PopSugar the number of monthly users, and it sits at an eye-popping 74 million.

That’s almost three times the amount of people who live in Australia. That’s nine million more people than the population of the United Kingdom. And that’s almost more than the number of Fast and Furious sequels.

"We just recently set a new record in December for monthly active users, so now we're at 74 million monthly active users—and that's really a testament to people coming back to the game, whether it's through the game updates or bringing in new players from across the world," said Chiang, who was named as Head of Minecraft just last week.

More than 144 million copies of Minecraft have been sold across more than a dozen platforms since its launch back in 2009, when it was just a clunky little LEGO rip-off developed by a guy named Markus Persson. It was purchased for $US2.5 billion by Microsoft back in 2014. We’re figuring it's probably paying for itself at this point.

So, next time you log-in to move a bunch of blocks around, just remember: 74 million other people are doing the exact same thing within a 30-day window.

If that makes you feel a little less special, we’re sorry. It’s just a fact.
