Jason Momoa is Set to Star in a Live-Action ‘Minecraft’ Movie

Is Jason Momoa playing Steve? 👀

Our fave curly-maned Aquaman and Dothraki tribal chief à la Game of Thrones is joining the pixelated universe of Minecraft, produced by Warner Bros.

After starring in sci-fi epic Dune earlier this year, alongside young’uns Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, he’ll be sporting a pickaxe and joining the zombies in The Overworld.

What do we know about the Minecraft movie?

Chatter of a film adaptation first popped up in 2014 when the creator of the game, Markus Persson, announced it via Twitter to get ahead of leaks.

Since then, the film’s pre-production has stopped, started, stalled and started again.

Several directorial names have been attached to the project, from the guy who directed The Adam Project, Shawn Levy, to Rob McElhenney of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Peter Solett who directed Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist.

Finally, it’s been confirmed Jared Hess will sit in the director’s chair. He’s known for the brilliant, belly-laugh-inducing Napoleon Dynamite, so we’re getting the feeling that, alongside Momoa’s comedic chops, we’ll be in for some chuckles.

In a now-deleted blog post, the developer Mojang Studios described the plot as “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers".

“After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

Given the post’s deletion, we can’t be certain the plot still stands.

When is the Minecraft movie coming out?

After being slated for a 2022 release (that was optimistic), all the pre-production chaos means we’re unlikely to see it in cinemas any time soon.

The reshuffle was due to COVID-19 and was done to make room for Warner Bros’ The Matrix: Resurrections and The Batman.

News of Momoa’s casting is surely a sign that big things are underway. Our question is, who’s playing the pigs?
