The Seven Most Cringeworthy Moments From the 2020 Golden Globes

Get the popcorn ready.
Is there anything better than watching a Hollywood star caught doing something slightly weird on camera? No, there isn’t. And with awards season officially underway, that can only mean one thing: we’re about to be treated to a myriad of gloriously awkward moments.

Earlier this week, the best in film and American television gathered at The Beverly Hilton in California for the 2020 Golden Globes, and the uncomfortable exchanges just kept on coming.
Of course, we can always rely on the Golden Globes to provide us with top-notch memes. In 2018, people were all about Natalie Portman speaking out against male bias in Hollywood, and we simply cannot forget the moment that everyone's my boyfriend Timothée Chalamet was seen wearing a sparkly harness on the red carpet.
However, the 2020 Golden Globes really brought it.
So, in no particular order, here are the seven most cringeworthy moments from the night.
7. Ricky Gervais roasted Leonardo DiCaprio for his dating history.
The ceremony was hosted by the controversial Ricky Gervais, and absolutely no celebrity was safe. In his opening monologue alone, he managed to insult most of Hollywood, including Felicity Huffman, James Corden and Judi Dench.
The British comedian also spoke about the long running time of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, ultimately using it to make fun of Leonardo DiCaprio’s history of dating younger women.
"Nearly three hours long, Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and by the end, his date was almost too old for him," Gervais said.
Leo took it well.
6. Beyonce refused to give Joaquin Phoenix a standing ovation.
Phoenix took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his role as failed comedian Arthur Fleck in Joker. While the entire audience gave the deserving actor a standing ovation, Queen B remained firmly seated.
It was weird.
5. People thought Jason Derulo fell down the stairs.
After the photo below was posted on Twitter, the internet started to think that the American singer and dancer had taken a tumble down the stairs.

Except, that isn’t Jason Derulo in the photo, and it wasn’t even taken at the 2020 Golden Globes. It’s actually a man falling down the steps at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. The meme started in 2015, when someone thought the guy looked like Jason Derulo, and tweeted that he’d fallen down the steps at the Met Gala.
Now, it has resurfaced once again.
4. Jennifer Aniston’s reaction during Brad Pitt’s speech.
Being in a room with your ex is never much fun. So, when the camera panned to Jennifer Aniston’s face during Brad Pitt’s acceptance speech, it was difficult to watch.
Winning the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Pitt made a joke about the media’s involvement in his love life.
"I was going to bring my mum, but I couldn’t cause’ any woman I stand next to they say I’m dating them," he said.
While Pitt delivered the punchline, the camera focused on Aniston’s face. Talk about a real-life nightmare.

3. Renée Zellweger’s acceptance speech was cut off by music.
Award shows have strict schedules, which means winners only have a limited amount of time to make their speech. If they’re running overtime, the music is turned up to hurry them off stage.
While accepting the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for her role in Judy, Renée Zellweger had to rush the end of her speech to avoid being completely drowned out by the music. The actress is not the first victim of this, and she certainly won’t be the last.
2. Ansel Elgort's singing.
We already knew that Ansel Elgort possessed immense theatricality after his role in Baby Driver, but we didn’t quite expect him to sing during his presenting gig.
When presenting the award for Best Original Song - Motion Picture, Elgort sang his lines instead of reading them. Just give him a Grammy.
1. Tom Hanks’ reaction to Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue.
Perhaps the best moment of the entire ceremony was Tom Hanks' facial expression while Ricky Gervais performed his opening monologue. When Gervais tore into celebrity culture, Hanks, who received the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, looked extremely unimpressed.
Naturally, it has inspired many memes.
Bring on the Oscars.
