The Marvel Universe Is Planning to Introduce Muslim Supergirl, Ms Marvel

Could Ms Marvel be your new fave superhero?

Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, has confirmed in an interview with the BBC that there are plans in the works to introduce Ms Marvel, a Muslim superhero, to the big screen.

While the Ms Marvel comic has been around since 1977, the character Kamala Khan became just the third person take on the mantle of Ms Marvel in 2013, making her the first Muslim superhero to appear in the Marvel Universe.

Kamala is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American girl from Jersey City who is inspired by the previous Ms Marvel, Carol Danvers, and takes on the title after Danvers becomes Captain Marvel. Her superpowers include shapeshifting and healing.

Considering most of the superheroes who have appeared in this universe are white males, this potential inclusion has already been welcomed by many.

While Feige didn't mention a timeline for when we might see Khan shapeshift across our screens, I think it's safe to say that we'll see it in the next decade when the remaining 20-or-so movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe trickle in.

And, before anyone decries this as just a tokenistic PC move, don't forget that many said the same of Black Panther and just look how that went.
