#PrayForNice: Terror Attack During Bastille Day Celebrations In France Kills 80

More than 70 people have been killed in an attack on Nice, France, during Bastille Day celebrations, ABC News reports.

The attack involved a truck reportedly loaded with weapons and grenades speeding through the Promenade des Anglais seafront.

According to The Associated Press, the French interior ministry has confirmed 80 have died in the attack. Eighteen others are critically injured.

The driver of the truck was shot dead by police.

French officials are yet to declare this a “terrorist attack”, but anti-terrorist investigators will front the inquiry into the event.

U.S. President Barack Obama nonetheless said the tragedy “appears to be a horrific terrorist attack” in a statement.

It is not yet known if the driver was acting alone or if he had accomplices, during the incident or in the planning stages of the attack.

Rumours of a hostage-taking incident were quashed by France’s interior ministry spokesperson.

It has so far been reported that one Australian was injured in the attack.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is attempting to determine if any others Australians were hurt during the incident.

Hours before the truck began ramming pedestrians on the French Riviera, the nation announced that the state of emergency first declared during last November’s attacks in Paris would finally come to an end this month.

It is understood that French President Francois Hollande is now in crisis talks, to discern if the Nice attack is the first in a series of coordinated assaults on France.

More news as it develops.
