France's "Spider-Man" Has Been Offered a Firefighting Job for Saving Dangling Child

The kid’s dad was busy playing Pokémon Go.

Mamoudou Gassama, the 22-year-old Mali migrant who climbed several balconies in Paris to save a dangling child, has been offered French citizenship and a job as a firefighter, the ABC reports.

Gassama became a viral star as a real-life "Spider-Man" when footage of his impromptu—and highly risky—rescue operation hit the web.

When asked by Le Parisien paper what inspired him to take such action, Gassama explained simply, "I did it because it was a child."

French President Emmanuel Macron met Gassama in the Elysee Palace soon after, to award him with a medal for "courage and devotion".

"We'll obviously be setting all your papers straight and if you wish it, we will start the process of naturalisation so that you can become French," President Macron said.

Although he isn’t eligible for immediate citizenship, ministers promised to make the process a speedy one.

President Macron also pledged to set Gassama up with a job as a firefighter, asking "if this fits your wishes".

"You could join the firefighters' corps so that you can do [such acts] on a daily basis."

The father of the rescued boy was eventually arrested for leaving his four-year-old child alone in the apartment. He had apparently been delayed in returning home because he was playing Pokémon Go.
