Taylor Swift Blasts Netflix’s “Ginny & Georgia” for Sexist Joke

She's accused the show of "degrading" women.

Netflix’s new series Ginny & Georgia is in the hot seat this week after making a pretty poor taste joke about Taylor Swift.

In an episode of the show, the character Ginny responds to a comment about breaking up with her boyfriend with, "What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift."

At a certain point, slut-shaming "jokes" morph into biting commentary about a person's perceived worth, suggesting their value as a human is determined by a measure of external relationships. Men aren't judged/labeled by their romantic choices. Women are. Therein lies the sexism.

The media has consistently made fun of Taylor's dating life throughout the duration of her career, so when the singer came across the comment, she didn’t hesitate to call the show out.

In a post on Twitter, Taylor told Ginny & Georgia to quit degrading women.

"Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse s*** as FuNnY," she wrote.

"Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you. Happy Women’s History Month I guess."

If you still haven’t seen Miss Americana, it’s a Netflix documentary directed by Emmy-winner Lana Wilson (After Tiller) that breaks down the numerous challenges Taylor has faced being a woman in the music industry.

Ginny & Georgia follows Ginny Miller (Antonia Gentry), a 15-year-old who often finds herself feeling that she is more mature than her own 30-year-old mother, Georgia Miller (Brianna Howey). Despite Georgia's lack of maturity, she's determined to give her daughter, and son, Austin (Diesel La Torraca), a better life and the childhood she never had.

Initially, the 10-episode series received some fairly mixed reviews, but since the Taylor snark was revealed, Swifties have bombarded both its Google and Rotten Tomatoes page with negative reviews.

Many of Taylor’s fans have shown their support for her stance on Twitter, pushing back at any claims that Taylor needs to "grow up".

At this stage, Netflix is yet to comment.
