PSA: “Squid Game” Season 2 Is Officially Happening

The games are coming back.

Finally, the news we’ve all been anxiously waiting for is here: Squid Game Season 2 is officially on its way!

As of Tuesday, it was confirmed that Netflix’s most popular show to date is returning for a second season, after basically everyone in the world begged for it.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Writer and Director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that the excitement from fans was more than enough for them to sign off on another season.

"There's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season," he said.

"So, I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. I do think it's too early to when and how that's going to happen."

Before we get too ahead of ourselves with questions about the new season, it’s important to note that while Season 2 is confirmed, it isn’t even close to being in production just yet, nor does anyone know when it might be released.

Hwang also went on to tease that our fave protagonist Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-jae) will be back for the second season and will “do something for the world”. Now that’s some tasty foreshadowing.

If you’re a bit behind the rest of the world Squid Game is a South Korean, nine-episode series that tells the grim story of hundreds of indebted people voluntarily entering a high-stakes survival game in the hopes of winning a massive cash prize.

Beginning with 456 competitors, each must compete against the other in six deceptively simplistic Korean childhood games to avoid ‘elimination’ (essentially, being brutally murdered).

Once a competitor is eliminated, a cash value of their participation is added to the prize pool, meaning that the more participants that are murdered, the more cash there is to win, adding up to 45.6 billion Won (or more than $53 million).

In just a few weeks, the new series captured the world by storm, shocking, yet captivating audiences basically everywhere with its sinister plotline.

Hwang told Variety that he wanted to create a series that made social commentary about contemporary South Korea, much like that of Academy Award-winning black comedy Parasite.

"I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society. Something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life," he said.

"As a survival game, it is entertainment and human drama.

"The games portrayed are extremely simple and easy to understand."

The news of the second season comes as a bit of a pleasant shock to Squid Game fans considering Hwang told Variety earlier in the year that he had no real plans for a second season.

“I don’t have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2,” he said.

“It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

His announcement about Gi-hun also contracts an interview with The Hollywood Reporter a few months ago, when he said that Season 2 likely won’t focus on him as the main character.

“It’s true that season one ended in an open-ended way, but I actually thought that this could be good closure for the whole story, too,” he explained.

“Season one ends with Gi-hun turning back and not getting on the plane to the States. And that was, in fact, my way of communicating the message that you should not be dragged along by the competitive flow of society, but that you should start thinking about who has created the whole system—and whether there is some potential for you to turn back and face it.

“So, I thought that might be a good, simple-but-ambiguous way to end the story for Gi-hun. But there are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, the Front Man,” he continued.

“So, I don’t know yet, but I’ll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season two storylines.”

Either way, it looks like Hwang isn’t giving away any spoilers from the vault that is his creative mind.

While there is no real timeline for Season 2 just yet, rest assured, we’ll defs keep you updated.
