Taylor Swift Wins Album Of The Year At The 2016 Grammy Awards; Gives Kanye A Serve From The Podium

Taylor Swift’s ubiquitous 1989 was named Album of the Year at today’s Grammy Awards, making her the first woman to win that prize more than once.

Swift previously triumphed at the 2010 ceremony with her record Fearless. This year, she defeated “Bad Blood” buddy Kendrick Lamar for the accolade, despite his record To Pimp A Butterfly being arguably the most critically acclaimed release of 2015. It was even co-signed by the White House.

Lamar simply couldn’t trump Swift’s pop opus, which also notched a win for Best Pop Vocal Album, to go alongside its 8.6 million album sales.

Fittingly, they shared the award for Best Music Video (again, “Bad Blood”).

When accepting the award, Taylor Swift subtweeted Kanye West something fierce.

On West’s just-debuted album The Life of Pablo, he takes credit for making Swift famous. Following significant backlash, West took to Twitter - as he usually does - to insist that the line was not only meant jokingly, but had originated from Swift herself.

The world now waits with bated breath for his sure-to-be-measured retort.

Elsewhere in the ceremony, Lamar was recognised for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song (“Alright”), Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (“These Walls”) and Best Rap Album (following the Grammys' infamous decision in 2014 to pass him over for Macklemore in the same category).

He spent the ceremony doing a lot of this:

Record of the Year went to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars for “Uptown Funk”, while Song of the Year (yes, it’s a different category, evaluated solely on the songwriting, rather than production) went to Ed Sheeran for “Thinking Out Loud”.

Australia’s representatives Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala were unfortunately shut-out, with Barnett losing Best New Artist to Meaghan Trainor, and Tame Impala falling to Alabama Shakes in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Alabama Shakes also collected the Grammys for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song (“Don’t Wanna Fight”).

Justin Bieber collected his first ever Grammy thanks to his collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, “Where Are U Now”, which was named Best Dance Recording.

The Weeknd also capped a breakout year with wins for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance (“Earned It”, for which he is also Oscar nominated).
