Courtney Barnett And Tame Impala Nabbed Some Grammy Noms (Oh, And So Did Taylor And Kendrick)

Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd will lead the pack at the 2016 Grammy Awards, but who cares about that when homegrown heroes Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala scored nods too?

Barnett, whose album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit debuted in the US Billboard Top 20 this year, is up for Best New Artist, opposite randos James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly and Meghan Trainor.

Tame Impala, meanwhile, face off against total basics Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Alabama Shakes and Björk in the race for Best Alternative Music Album. (Okay, this is decidedly a more competitive field, but still, Currents was the business.)

Kendrick Lamar scored 11 nominations for his recent opus, To Pimp A Butterfly, but Taylor Swift (with seven nominations) goes into the ceremony the hot favourite for all major awards.

(If you’re wondering how Swift’s 2014 record 1989 could potentially sweep the 2016 Grammys, take note of the bizarre eligibility period: October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015. This also explains – but doesn’t excuse – Adele’s glaring absence.)

1989 and To Pimp a Butterfly will battle The Weekend’s Beauty Behind the Madness, Chris Stapleton’s Traveller and Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color for Album of the Year.

Swift’s “Blank Space” and The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” will take on Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”, D’Angelo and the Vanguard’s “Really Love” and Mark Ronson’s Bruno Mars collaboration “Uptown Funk” for Record of the Year.

Song of the Year, which is apparently a different thing from Record of the Year, sees Kendrick’s “Alright” up against Swift’s “Blank Space”, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”, Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” and “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town.

The Aussie takeover ceremony goes down in February of 2016.
