PSA: “Puberty Blues” Could Be Returning For Season 3

Cue Dragon’s “Are You Old Enough?” ‘cos we’re about to talk Puberty Blues.

Ever since Netflix added Seasons 1 and 2 of Puberty Blues on 7 June, Gen Z has been going gangbusters, binging the heck out of the short series.

The remake was defs popular when it originally aired back in 2012 but now in 2021, it has a whole new generation of teen viewers and it’s popping off, both on Netflix and pretty much everywhere else on the internet.

Because of its popularity, you can imagine the hysteria when former actor from the series, Ed Oxenbould (who you may remember as David) spilled the beans that a third season of Puberty Blues is on the cards after seven long years.

This news has us so excited that we can barely contain ourselves but considering it’s coming from Ed, we are sceptical.

Ed has been blowing up on TikTok as @ihaveibs (lol) ever since about mid-2020 for his antics and jokes. He is often noticed by fans who remember him from childhood masterpieces such as Paper Planes and Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day.

In the reveal video, Ed stated that he had some exciting news, and then went on to reveal that Puberty Blues was “back” for Season 3.

Honestly, knowing Ed he could be pulling our leg big time, in which case he can rack off (ha, see what I did there). If not, we’re in for a sweet ride.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, Puberty Blues is a coming-of-age drama tv series set in late 1970’s Sydney, and tells the story of two best mates, Debbie (Ashleigh Cummings) and Sue (Brenna Harding) as they start dating, encounter drugs and alcohol, teenage rebellion and feel peer pressure from their mates.

The series is a pretty heavy one that covers some serious topics, so if you’re going to sit down to watch it, make sure you’re old enough.

At the end of the final season, the audience was left on a cliff-hanger as Debbie and Sue run away together, and Gary (Sean Keenan) goes off on his own.

So, if a new season is on the cards, it will likely have to pick up a little later than where we left off, and follow where Debbie and Sue a few years down the track.

Alternatively, some commenters on Ed’s TikTok have asked if the third season would focus more on David as a character and his group of friends, going through the same stage of life as his sister in the earlier seasons.

All in all, this announcement and its timing (considering it only hit Netflix three weeks ago) is real suss, but we wouldn’t put it past Netflix to do a show revival—it is something they love doing.

For now, you can catch the entire series, as well as the original 1981 movie, on Netflix (which is just as good imo).

Watch this space in case Netflix reveals the truth about Season 3 being "dropped."
