“Princess Diaries 3” Might Actually Be Happening

Two years ago, we took no pleasure in publishing a piece entitled “Sorry: Princess Diaries 3 Is Not Happening (Yet)”.

In it, we lamented, “there is no screenwriter working on a script”, nor was Anne Hathaway attached to reprise her role as Queen (formerly Princess) Mia of Genovia.

And it certainly didn’t help things that Garry Marshall, director of Parts I and II, passed away in 2016. (RIP).

Today, however, we bear only good news: Meg Cabot, author of the original book series, has told EW there is now indeed a script for Princess Diaries 3, and that it “could happen” in the near future. And though, she’s “not allowed” to spill details on the plot, she confirmed it wouldn’t follow her books any longer.

"[I]t’s really more following the movie than the books,” she said.

“The last version I read, she definitely did not find out that she has a biracial younger sister… which I personally would’ve thought was hilarious, but that was not the direction they were going.”

Who wrote the script, we have no idea.

Cabot would also like a Princess Diaries Broadway musical, but maybe just one thing at a time, Meg.

Earlier this year, Julie Andrews confirmed “talk” about a third Princess Diaries movie, adding, “[Anne Hathaway]’s very keen to do it; I would very willingly and happily do it.”
