The Change-Up: Our $5 Banknote Has Been Given A Makeover

Like Princess Mia and Laney Boggs before it, our iconic $5 banknote has been given a makeover.

The Reserve Bank of Australia today unveiled the new-look note, ahead of its release into circulation on September 1, 2016.

Queen Elizabeth II is still on there, as is the pinkish hue that has made our colourful currency the envy of the world (or, at the very least, some forum called Poms in Oz).

The updated note, however, features a striking blue splash just left of center, with the Prickly Moses wattle and the Eastern Spinebill bird hanging out within.

What’s maybe most significant about the rebooted Pink Lady are the enhancements for the vision-impaired community; specifically, a distinctive ‘tactile’ feature to help distinguish between the different denominations.

There are also new security features embedded in the notes to prevent counterfeiting.

Look, there’s no kiwi firing a laser from its eyes, but these updates will do.

Expect new designs for the remaining notes to be rolled out in the near future.

On a somewhat related note, the petition to change our currency's name to "Dollarydoos" needs 9,000 more signatures to reach its target of 75,000. What are you waiting for?
