Our Brand New $5 Note Has Finally Been Released, With Special Features And Everything

Australia’s brand new fiver has been released into the wild.

It marks our nation's first new currency note in a quarter of a century, and it can be all yours for just five dollars.

According to ABC News, this updated $5 bill has new security features to keep counterfeiters at bay, including a “world first” top to bottom window.

(That transparent streak initially fooled people into thinking the bill was actually blue.)

They are also tactile, on account of two raised dots, intended to assist Australians who are blind or vision impaired. The change follows a petition led by Sydney teen Connor McLeod, who complained to the Australian Human Rights Commission about the lack of accessible currency.

Now, before you start setting fire to your old fivers in anticipation of these new, high-tech notes, the Reserve Bank says you can still spend the originals – though they will eventually disappear from circulation.

Maybe hold onto one, because who knows how much they’ll be worth in the future? (Probably still $5.)

Next year, look forward to the $10 note’s own upgrade.
