The New $5 Banknote Isn't Blue At All (No, Seriously, You're Looking At It Wrong)

The internet has a lot of feelings about Australia’s new $5 banknote, not all of them positive. (Okay, barely any of those feelings are positive.)

Most of the complaints have focused on the blue splash down the center of the updated fiver, with many comparing it to vomit (but, maybe the kind of vomit that comes after you’ve downed a Powerade).

And yet, the RBA has revealed that the note isn’t blue at all. You’re looking at it wrong.

We know what you’re thinking…

But it’s true.

As Buzzfeed explains, the RBA just put the notes – deceptively – on a blue background.

That splash is actually transparent.

Everything has changed.

  • i don't get why people are going against it. Like how is a different designed note going to affect anyone?

  • Are the other notes ($10, $20 etc.) going to look the same soon?

How awesome would it be if they incorporated some Aboriginal aspects into the design!

  • i don't know why they needed to change it, the old one looks a bit olden day fashioned but its not really worth spending all that money just so we can change the look. Has anyone thought about what to do with the old $5 notes when we swap to the new one I'm glad someone has had a idea

    • Actually, they the new banknotes will merge with the current ones, so the current ones will still be legal tender, but the mint won't be making any more of those.

  • There's a lot of stuff to look at

  • It's ok

  • It looks alright I guess

  • is there like a marking for the blind other than the size of the notes.

  • I think that it looks great. I think that it different and really out there as well as mdern. I think that it woud be a great banknote to have in Australia.

  • Wow look's good

  • I like it, the new $5 note looks more attractive
