There’s a Petition Calling for Nikki Webster to Sing at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games

Please Brisbane, make it happen.

History could repeat itself at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games as a petition to get Australian pop singer Nikki Webster to perform at the opening ceremony is gaining traction.

For those who missed it (we don’t know how you did though) Brisbane won the nomination to host the 2032 Olympic Games, which will see the world’s biggest sporting event come back down under for the first time since Sydney in 2000.

Don’t worry if you were too young to remember the opening ceremony ‘cos you’re about to get a lesson in music history.

Easily the standout from the Sydney 2000 Opening Ceremony was the breakthrough performance of 13-year-old singer Nikki Webster. Wearing a now famous hot-pink dress, Webster belted out “Under the Southern Skies” to a packed-out Sydney Olympic Stadium and won over the hearts of the nation in an instant.

Honestly, it’s an iconic part of modern Aussie history.

From there, Webster went on to release her first single “Strawberry Kisses” which is legit a certified banger.

Since then, the popstar sorta faded into obscurity for a few years before returning to the limelight briefly in 2019 as the Alien in the first episode of the masked singer. The less that's said about that show the better.

Now, the now 34-year-old singer is back in the news after 2GB radio host Deborah Knight started a petition to get Webster back for the 2032 Opening Ceremony in Brisbane.

Currently sitting at 989 signatures, the petition seems to have worked as Webster was tracked down by Woman’s Day to comment on the possibility of returning.

“I’d love to perform in Brisbane, who wouldn’t?! I mean, it’s the most rewarding performance of any person’s career, to represent your country on a global scale. It’s pretty awesome,” Webster said.

“I remember watching Cathy Freeman light the cauldron and I was thinking, ‘Where will I be in four years’ time?’ I certainly wasn’t thinking about where I’d be at 45.”

Oh, and for those wanting Webster to pull the famous pink dress out of the closet, we’ve got some bad news.

“I definitely won’t be wearing the pink dress,” she defiantly said.

I guess we’re okay with that.

Here's hoping that this petition isn't just a flash in the pan and it actually turns into the organisers for the 2032 Games involving Webster in some way, at the very least for fan service.
