Newest Cover Of ‘National Geographic’ Features A Young Trans Activist

National Geographic has just released their newest issue “Gender Revolution” which features a young trans activist on the cover.

It’s the first time the magazine has ever had a transgender person on its cover.

Avery Jackson, a nine-year-old trans girl from Missouri, stars on the cover of the special publication. The entire issue will be devoted to gender identity and rights.

Avery first made a name for herself through a series of YouTube videos called “Avery Chats”. In the videos, she describes the process of coming to terms with gender identity at a young age.

The cover has minimal text, though it does include a quote from the young activist.

“The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy,” it reads.

National Geographic’s editor-in-chief Susan Goldberg said, “Beliefs about gender are shifting rapidly and radically.”

“That’s why we’re exploring the subject this month, looking at it through the lens of science, social systems, and civilizations throughout history,” she wrote in a web-post.

Ms Goldberg notes how the cover has already elicited a mixed bag of responses. While the magazine has mostly received positive feedback for the cover, this decision has come with controversy.

“Since we shared photos of the cover of our special issue on gender on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, tens of thousands of people have weighed in with opinions, from expressions of pride and gratitude to utter fury,” she wrote.

Another alternate cover will also be released, featuring an ensemble of transgender youths.

The January edition of National Geographic will be released on December 27, 2016.
