The Most Unhinged Happenings at the VMAs 2022: A Rundown

Ft. Johnny Depp flying, Snoop in the metaverse and Addison Rae’s mum…

If there’s one thing for certain, it’s that our loved and loathed celebs always manage to put on a show at the MTV Video Music Awards every year.

From Lady Gaga adorning a meat dress, Taylor/Kanye-gate and Lorde interpretive dancing because she had the flu, the night always ends with a bang or at least a ‘wtf?’.

There’s no shortage of similarly questionable occurrences this year, and we’ve compiled them here, so you can get your disbelief out of the way in one hit.

Johnny Depp flew across the stage as a Moon Person.

There were rumours circulating that Johnny Depp would be appearing at the MTV VMAs, but no one quite anticipated this.

Between commercial breaks, Johnny popped up digitally in the helmet of a Moon Person floating above the stage. He gave a few short remarks and then simply... floated away.

“You know what? I needed the work,” he said during the beginning of the show.

He posted a pre-taped clip to his Instagram in which he says, “I just want you guys to know that I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need.”

Snoop Dogg and Eminem performed in the metaverse.

Rap legends Snoopy Snoop and Eminem came together and took us on a surreal ride from their couch to a trippy metaverse landscape.

They delivered a rendition of “From the D 2 the LBC” as they turned into avatars in true Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT-style.

They ended on stage in front of the cheering, but surely bewildered audience.

Yung Gravy’s date was…Addison Rae’s mum?

This is news to us, but apparently rapper Yung Gravy has been dating Addison Rae’s mother for a short while.

They were smooching it up on the red carpet, and that’s about all we have to say about it.

Taylor Swift randomly appeared and had a boogie (wholesome).

Not as chaotic, and definitely in true Taylor fashion, the queen herself graced the carpet with her presence.

She arrived alongside Dylan O’Brien, who starred in the 10-minute short film “All Too Well”. They both boogied out to Lizzo and Avril Lavigne.

Turns out she had some news for the Swifties, announcing her upcoming album "Midnights" when she took to the stage.

That’s probably about all you can take, so we’ll leave it at that. How will next year top it?
