VMAs 2015: Kanye Runs For President, Nicki Takes On Miley And Taylor Unveils “Wildest Dreams” Vid

Well, what an eventful MTV VMAs that was! (Feel free to recycle that sentence at the conclusion of literally every VMAs ceremony from now until the universe’s heat death.)

Taylor Swift, as expected, took out the top prize for her all-star “Bad Blood” video, whilst also taking home trophies for Best Pop Video and Best Female Video (the latter two awarded for “Blank Space”, which, let’s face it, is the better clip by far).

Swift squad-member Fetty Wap received the Artist to Watch Award, while her “Bad Blood” buddy Kendrick Lamar saw his haunting clip for “Alright” receive the Best Direction accolade. Oh, and both Taylor and Kendrick shared the Best Collaboration gong for “Bad Blood” too.

Best Male Video went to Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson for “Uptown Funk”, thus, hopefully, bringing to an end its reign of ubiquity.

A show highlight came as Nicki Minaj, having opened the ceremony with one-time frenemy Taylor Swift, returned to the stage to collect Best Hip-Hop Video for “Anaconda”.

During her acceptance speech, she responded to Master of Ceremonies Miley Cyrus, who had been quoted earlier in the week as describing Nicki as “not very polite” for her Tweets about being snubbed in the Best Video category, by throwing some shade.

Well, not so much shade as an entire patio.

The show’s true highlight, however, came when Kanye West went full-Kanye after receiving the Vanguard career achievement award.

In the delightfully earnest, open-hearted and, obviously, unpolished speech, he too made amends with Taylor Swift for that time he interrupted her acceptance speech – “It crosses my mind a little bit like when I go to a baseball game and 60,000 people boo me” – before half-jokingly concluding that he would run for President in 2020.

Just prior to the ceremony, Taylor unveiled her video for “Wildest Dreams”, also directed by “Bad Blood” helmer Joseph Kahn. Basically, she just kicked off her 2016 VMAs campaign.

Not to be outdone, Miley Cyrus had a surprise of her own at the end of the show: a free album she made with The Flaming Lips.
