ISIS Claims Responsibility For Baghdad Bombings; At Least 125 Dead, 180 Injured

A suicide bombing in a popular shopping district of Baghdad on Saturday night has claimed at least 120 lives, injuring a further 180 individuals.

According to ABC News, Islamic State has taken responsibility for the suicide bombing, which was apparently carried out by an Iraqi in a refrigerator truck.

The truck was parked outside a busy restaurant in Karrada, where families were celebrating Ramadan.

Footage of the explosion’s aftermath was posted to Facebook. Please note it is distressing in nature.

Shortly afterwards, a second bomb went off in eastern Baghdad, killing five more people.

Iraq’s Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi, has vowed “punishment” for those responsible. Iraq will observe three days of mourning for the victims.

Last week, Iraqi forces recaptured Fallujah; a former IS stronghold located 50km west of Baghdad.

Islamic State is also believed to be behind last week’s bombing at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport.

More news as it develops.
