Terrorist Attack At Istanbul Airport Leaves At Least 41 Dead, Many More Wounded

Istanbul has been rocked by a terrorist attack on its main international airport.

Update: The death toll has been revised to 41, with 239 people injured. The original story has been updated accordingly.

The majority of casualties were Turkish nationals, though citizens from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, China, Jordan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Iran and Ukraine were among the dead.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has told the ABC that the Government is “working very hard” to establish whether or not any Australians were present at the time of the attack.

The nation’s Justice Minister, Bekir Bozdag, described the circumstances of the attack to CNN.

"According to information I have received, at the entrance to the Ataturk Airport international terminal a terrorist first opened fire with a Kalashnikov and then blew themself up," he said.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim confirmed that initial findings point towards Islamic State as the perpetrators. (Turkey is part of the coalition against IS, led by the United States.)

Today’s events follow two suicide attacks in Istanbul, believed to have been perpetrated by IS, two car bombings in the capital of Ankara, conducted by a Kurdish militant group, and a car bomb attack in central Istanbul – all of which have taken place in 2016 alone.
