New York Bombing Suspect Arrested After Shootout With Police

A 28-year-old man has been arrested by police, following a shootout, under suspicion of the bombings that rocked New York City over the weekend.

According to ABC News, Ahmad Khan Rahami has been charged with attempted murder for the blast that injured 29 people on Saturday.

The New Jersey resident and American citizen was publicly identified as the prime suspect hours before the shootout. He was brought to police attention after being spotted by a bar owner in Linden, 32km outside of New York.

Rahami was sleeping in the hallway of the closed bar when the call to police was made.

Linden Police Captain James Sarnicki said Rahami pulled out a handgun and fired at an officer after being instructed to show his hands.

“Fortunately the officer had his bulletproof vest on,” the captain explained.

Further shots were made at a nearby police car; an officer was injured when broken glass struck his forehead.

Rahami was shot in the arm and leg by officers and subsequently arrested.

Besides the bomb blast in Chelsea, Rahami is suspected of causing another explosion in New Jersey and planting six more devices near a train station.

No other individuals are being investigated for the acts of terror; five suspects who were taken into custody for being in a car associated with Rahami were released without charge.

FBI officials have reiterated there is no evidence of a link between Rahami and extremist cells within the area.

A motivation for the bombing is not yet known, though sources close to Rahami have reportedly said he was radicalised after travelling to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
