Is Wireless The Way To Go?

Is Wireless The Way To Go?

Much to the delight of aspiring meme-makers and vine comedians, Apple recently unveiled their innovative Airpods.

Unsurprisingly, within hours the criticisms came rolling in, centred around its questionable design, its impracticality and its price (which will empty most wallets and leave your budget in turmoil).

Have we been too rash with our hate? Apple seems to have a knack for making ‘courageous’ changes that are initially annoying, but to which we inevitably adapt.

Suffice it to say, Apple seems to have quite a bit of immunity in the market; however, it is true that they have some stiff competition (or, at least did). And many Apple addicts have since been disillusioned and turned to other brands (though, maybe not so much now).

So, then comes the crux of the issue: Has Apple’s recent makeover of the headphones gone too far in ruining (rather than fixing) a problem that was simply not there to begin with? Will the Airpods just be a flop? Or is this just another time where we thought we would hate something, but in true Apple fashion, it proves to be a resounding success? I think it’s a mixture of both.

Okay, I know everyone hates a fence sitter, but at this point in time it can’t be helped!

There are simply too many uncertainties and impracticalities with having wireless headphones to make this update a wholly welcome one, I must say. I shiver just thinking of how easily they could be dropped into an open sewage drain during a jog (literally $AUD229 down the drain). In essence, Apple’s Airpods feel like a wow-factor gadget for the trendsetters (who have deep pockets).

Then again, the age-old struggle of tangled wires will become a thing of the past - one point to Apple. And some reviewers have stated that they don’t fall out of the ears quite as easily as they might appear. So all is not lost (yet).

I hate to be one of the sceptics. I’ll just need some convincing that Airpods are necessary. Nonetheless, I am definitely here, with my fingers crossed, hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Who knows? Perhaps Apple can prove us all wrong. Maybe we are ready for a wireless world.

  • I don't think wireless will not produce good sound for many years, for example the Bose sound true headphones sound much better wired than wirelessly because of the overall compressed audio. Wireless may only appeal to fitness freaks and even then it's impractical.
