Instagram Has Introduced a Feature to Add Pronouns to Your Bio

Heck/yes!

In excellent news, the team at Instagram have officially warmed our little hearts by adding a pronouns feature to the app, making it 100 times easier for transgender and gender nonconforming users to express their gender identity online.

The feature added on Wednesday can be found in the ‘Edit Profile’ section of your Instagram page, so it’s super easy to use. If you can’t yet see the option to include it, you may need to update your app.

As soon as this news was announced users started celebrating it all over the internet, not just on Insta.

Excuse me while I go update my profile real quick.

If you’re new to Instagram or are still a little foggy on how to use it, no stress, they uploaded an explainer video on how to add your pronouns right to their @creators page in case you need a visual aid.

“As of today, you can add your pronouns to your bio as an Instagram function. You might be asking ‘well, I’m not transgender, why do I have to add my pronouns to my bio?’ Here’s why,” trans athlete Schuyler Bailar explained in Instagram’s post.

“Gender expression—how we look, how we act, the clothes that we wear—does not always equal gender identity, and sharing your pronouns helps dismantle this norm that people think gender identity always equals gender expression. It also creates a safe space for trans and gender non-conforming folks to share our pronouns too.”

Aside from this feature being an excellent option for everyone—regardless of whether they’re trans, non-binary or cisgender—Instagram have also included the option for you to choose if you want your pronouns to be visible to everyone or just your mates.

This is a super important part of the feature as it can help keep people safe and comfortable knowing that only people you trust know those personal details about your life.

“Pronouns for me are the foundation of my gender identity and by adding them to the platform I feel very acknowledged and supported, and I feel like it will be a happier place to be,” non-binary influencer Dylan Mulvaney said in Instagram’s post.

As of writing this article, the new option is only available to users in the US, UK, Canada and Australia but fingers crossed it makes its way all over the rest of the world soon.
