How to Watch the Final Season of "Game of Thrones" in Australia

Wondering how to 'watch the Throne' down under? Here’s what you need to know.

It’s time to say goodbye to your old mates Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Arya and that wacky Grey Worm, because Game of Thrones is coming to its long-anticipated, equally-dreaded, expectedly-violent end.

Who will live? Who will die? Who will claim the Iron Throne? Sure, those questions are important, and will no doubt be answered by the final six episodes in the conclusive eighth season of GOT. But one question takes even greater precedence: How the hell do you watch it in Australia?

Well, that's one question we're happy to answer.

Of course, in America, the program airs on the premium cable channel HBO on Sunday nights (U.S. time), and can be streamed via the HBO GO app.

However, down under, we have to rely on alternate methods, given HBO isn’t available to us (yet).

So, after the trailer, find out everything you need to know if you want to watch Game of Thrones S8 this April and May.

When and where can I watch it in Australia?

If you want to watch Game of Thrones with the rest of the world, you’ll need to have Foxtel and tune into the Fox Showcase channel for the global launch on Monday 15 April at 11am AEST. You can also watch it at the same time—or play catch-up—if you have the paid Foxtel Now streaming service (provided your plan contains the Fox Showcase channel, or Foxtel’s 'Essentials'). Learn more here.

How long does Season 8 run for?

The first episode debuts Monday 15 April (Australian time), with the remaining five episodes airing on subsequent Mondays, until the sixth and final episode drops on Monday 20 May.

How long is each episode?

Buckle those bladders up:

Episode 1: 54 minutes

Episode 2: 59 minutes

Episode 3: 1 hour, 22 minutes

Episode 4: 1 hour, 18 minutes

Episode 5: 1 hour, 20 minutes

Episode 6: 1 hour, 20 minutes

We're sure they'll be worth sitting through with crossed/clenched legs.

I need more Game of Thrones content. What is available to me?

Besides revisiting the first seven seasons via Foxtel’s streaming app, or on iTunes and other paid services, you can enjoy a "behind the scenes" special titled Games of Thrones: The Last Watch on Monday 27 May, again on Fox Showcase or streaming on Foxtel Now from 11am AEST.

Foxtel’s even airing an aftershow called Thrones 360 LIVE, hosted by James Mathison and Stephanie Bendixsen, the evening of each episode’s airing on Fox Showcase, Fox8 and Foxtel Now.

When can I just watch Game of Thrones S8 on iTunes and other, non-Foxtel services?

Years ago, you could purchase new eps of Game of Thrones about 24 hours after they debuted on Foxtel, which holds the exclusive first-run rights. However, the agreement between HBO and Foxtel changed shortly after Season 3, which means Foxtel gets exclusive rights to this season for its entire duration. So, if you’re really patient and willing to avoid the internet/having conversations with your loved ones for the entirety of April and May, you can wait for S8 to hit other paid services from late May. Don't expect to ever see it on Netflix or Stan though.

Who’s still even alive in Game of Thrones?

We’re so glad you asked. Here’s a collection of survivors names (based on those still breathing prior to S8’s debut). We expect many of them to be crossed out on account of dragon fire, stabbing by White Walker stabbing, stabbing by Arya and/or natural causes (though, the latter seems particularly unlikely).

Prepare your bodies.
