How to Boost Like It's Nobody's Business In "Team Sonic Racing"

There are a lot of ways to boost in Team Sonic Racing. Let us show you the ways.
There's a new Sonic release and no, it's not that horror-inducing live-action film due next year.
Instead, in the game Team Sonic Racing, it's regular Sonic teaming up with his friends and foes and racing for bragging rights, as you'd expect from any decent kart-racing video game.
If you've ever played a kart racing game (Mario Kart or Crash Nitro Kart, anyone?) you know the primary goal is to win. The quickest way to do that? Boosting, duh.
It turns out there are a lot of ways to boost but it's not always explained in painstaking detail to you from the start. So, in order to avoid frustrating 'aha' moments after you've already sunk in hours, here's what you need to get started.
Get a headstart.

Just like another unnamed kart racing game (Mario Kart), you have an opportunity to get a baby boost at the start of the race in Team Sonic Racing. To do that, immediately press acceleration (R2 on PS4, RT on Xbox, ZR on Switch) when the countdown starts and then let go straight after each number. Do this with each number, including "GO", and, if timed right, you'll get a boosted start.
Follow the arrows.
This one might seem obvious, but those glowing pink arrows on the track? Yeah, they're there to give you a boost too but they don't make them easy to get. It'll take a little bit of effort to line up each one in succession in some sections of the track but it will give you an edge.
Help your mates out.
This is where the Team aspect of the game's title comes in. Obviously, the whole game is about making sure you and your teammates land somewhere in those top three spots, and to make sure you don't forget that, the makers have added in some cool little features.
When you're coming first out of your team in the race, you'll leave a golden trail in your wake. Your teammates can use this trail to gain a boost and then, if you stay in their trail for about five-or-so seconds, you'll "slingshot" in front of them. Neat.

Additionally, you can also pass on a "skimboost" to your spun-out teammates by driving just by them (or "skimming" them) and it'll give them a boost to get them back to speed.
Tokyo Drift's got nothing on you.
Finally, there's the classic move of drifting. When taking a turn, you'll need to drift (hold down L2 for PS4, LT for Xbox, ZL for Switch) to get around the turn faster and get a special boost. The longer you hold the drift, the more powerful the boost will be and you'll see the flame colours change up to three times depending how strong it gets.

Team Sonic Racing is available around Australia now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows.
