Here’s Your First Look at Will Smith and the Real-Life Cast of “Aladdin”

Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake has had to overcome its fair share of hurdles.

First, there was the hilarious admission by Disney producers that they were struggling to find an Indian or Middle-Eastern actor who could sing and act (as if Bollywood wasn’t a thing).

Then, as recently as this week, there was significant Twitter clapback to the casting of Billy Magnussen as a new character: a white prince, seemingly just to give the project a Caucasian star.

Disney: D'you like our Aladdin casting choices?

Me: Um...yeah?

Disney: You know what's missing?

Me: I-

But if the rest of the cast is sweating the roiling backlash, they didn’t show it in this fist photo, dropped by Will Smith (aka your new Genie) on Facebook today.

Guy Ritchie is directing Aladdin, which is due out in the next few years. (There is no official release date yet.)

Mena Massoud will play the title role, with Naomi Scott (aka the Pink Power Ranger) taking on Jasmine. Marwan Kenzari has been set as Jafar, but to be honest, he looks pretty chummy with his castmates in that photo. I know shooting’s only just begun, but come on gang, let’s get in character.
