Gilly Casually Dropped the Biggest Ever Reveal on “Game of Thrones” Last Night

Gi-lllllly.

Following the dragon battle in last week’s Game of Thrones episode, “The Spoils of War”, Monday’s instalment, “Eastwatch”, certainly felt a lot less explosive (save for a few fried Tarlys).

However, eagle-eared viewers might have heard the weight of an atomic bombshell—perhaps the most momentous in the show’s history—being dropped oh-so-casually by Gilly (Hannah Murray) of all people.

No disrespect to Gilly, but following S7’S poop-montage premiere, we didn’t expect any major revelations to emerge from Sam and Gilly’s time in the Citadel.

Spoilers ahead.

While Sam fumes over the intractability of the Maesters, Gilly—who only recently learned to read, FYI—shares some fun facts from one of the Citadel’s old record books.

One of those involved the “annulment” of Prince Rhaegar, who was later remarried to another woman in Dorne.

Before she can elaborate, Sam cuts her off to complain about his boring job.

But hardcore GOTters know what’s up.

At the end of last season, the time-travelling Bran spied Lyanna Stark dying in the throes of childbirth. The child was, of course, Jon Snow, who was later taken in by Ned Stark. But the father is believed to be none other than Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys’ older brother and heir to the Iron Throne. Too bad he died.

This means that, if Lyanna and Rhaegar were officially married—and not just conducting a cheeky affair—Jon Snow is the rightful king, and not Daenerys.

This also confirms even further that Dany is Jon’s aunt, so maybe cool it with the shipping.
