Five Tips to Get the Most Out of a University Open Week

This is your chance to get a first-hand look at uni life.

This article is presented in partnership with Curtin University.

This time of year can only mean one thing—Open Day szn.

But Curtin University have decided to do things differently. They’ve got so much for you to explore, they’re hosting a whole Open Week from 5-8 September!

By now, you probably know everything there is to know about why you should go along to an Open Day, but how do you make the most of it?

We’ve put together the ultimate guide for everything you need to know before you head along.

1. Plan ahead.

Whether you’re looking to take the leap into further study, change your career path or even if you have no idea what you want to do yet (same lol), you'll wanna be prepared before you go to Open Week.

Take a look at the schedule in advance 'coz there will be dedicated info sessions covering different areas of study. Choose those that interest you the most and plan out when and where they are so you don't miss anything important.

Okay, we'll just put it here for you. Different study areas will be showcased on the following evenings:

  • Online webinars on Monday 5 September (4pm to 7pm)
  • Health Sciences on Tuesday 6 September (4pm to 7pm)
  • Business and Law on Wednesday 7 September (4pm to 7pm)
  • Humanities on Wednesday 7 September (4pm to 7pm)
  • Science and Engineering on Thursday 8 September (4pm to 7pm)

Also, plan out any questions you might want to ask the academic experts, who will be on hand to help you.

2. Go with an open mind.

Take Open Week as a chance to explore the Curtin campus and get to know the staff and students there.

If you go with an open mind, a whole world of courses and careers will open up to you. You can attend different info sessions across multiple days and see what takes your fancy.

Who knows what you might learn from the subject matter experts and facility tours—you might walk away wanting to do something you never even knew existed before!

3. Avoid getting hangry.

Hanger is a real thing (the scientists even proved it) and there is nothing worse than trying to take in new information when your tummy is rumbling.

So, take advantage of the food trucks and free refreshments and snacks on campus during Open Week!

4. Take the opportunity to meet new friends.

There's no better time to get a head start on making friends at uni than Open Week.

There will be a bunch of current students around to chat to, as well as fellow newbies like yourself gearing up to start their study soon.

You should make note of everyone you meet so you keep in touch, including academics—you never know when you might think of a question you want to ask. You'll be grateful you've got their email to get in touch directly.

5. Take note of where everything is.

Let's face it, you're probably going to get lost on campus at least once when you start uni. So, use Open Week as a bit of trial period to get all that stress of not knowing where the heck you are outta the way.

Take the tours on offer and get shown around by a pro. But don't just follow them—take note of all the important things, like the nearest parking and toilets and of course, the best cafe.

Register your interest to make sure you don't miss any info about Curtin University's Open Week from 5-8 September.
