There’s been a lot of chatter about Open Days recently – so much so, you might be feeling pretty confident that you know what to expect.
But do you know how to really make the most of it, which questions you should ask staff, and what to find out from current students?
Do you know which parts of campus are the best to explore, where all the free stuff is, or how to plan your day most efficiently so you don’t miss any of the action?
If you’re thinking about attending the number one young university in Australia – a.k.a University of Technology Sydney (UTS) – you’ll be glad to know that they’re gearing up for their Open Day on Saturday 26 August.
You’ll also be glad to know that we’ve enlisted the help of current UTS students and staff to put together the ultimate guide to squeeze the most outta your UTS Open Day.

What questions should I ask current students and academics during info sessions?
Bella Wicks (Bachelor of Forensic Science, Diploma in Languages): “Ask about university life, courses and what to expect in terms of lectures, facilities and internship opportunities.”
Jay Newman (Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science): “Ask students and academics questions relating to uni life, making friends during your studies, discovering new things about yourself and your surroundings, and what you can expect to learn as part of your studies, relevant to their specific faculties.”
We also got some of the staff to add a few suggestions of their own for extra inspo.
- How will I learn (lectures, tutorials, practicals, online, on campus) and be assessed (exams, assessments)?
- What career opportunities are available to me once I complete the course?
- What are the best and worst things about uni?
- What’s studying in the city like?
- What clubs and societies are available?

Where can I find the best swag and any comps or giveaways?
Jay says, “students can find the best gear at the ActivateUTS shop through the ground floor, and there are several competitions clubs run daily worth getting into!”
Heads up: the UTS Store won’t be open on Open Day, but you can check out all the merch online.
Oh, and if you register and attend UTS Open Day, you’ll instantly go in the running to win one of two uni starter packs worth more than $250.
We’re talking UTS ear pods, a hoodie, a power bank, laptop sleeve and so much more! Thank you very much.

What are the best facilities and food spots to explore around campus?
Moira Cruz (Bachelor of Communication, and Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation) says, “check out all the design exhibitions from fashion to architecture and, in terms of facilities, definitely Protospace and all the science labs – the DAB photography studio is great too. Find all the hidden cafe spots, like Penny Lane and Happy Hour at Cafe 10!”
UTS staff recommends to “go on a campus tour led by a student ambassador to get all the insights and be able to ask them questions as you see what UTS has to offer".
What are your registration tips and tricks so no one misses anything?
Moira: “Check the schedules and everything else on offer, have a plan of where to go and what stalls/workshops to prioritise, whilst leaving some extra time to explore other events during any free time.”
Jay: “Plan your day depending on the events you want to go to before turning up on the day, as it can be a scramble planning at the last minute.”
Our tips?
Be sure to bring a reusable water bottle and leave your own bag at home as you’ll get a UTS tote bag when you arrive (for all those goodies!).
