Facebook Might Introduce a Membership Charge For Any Groups You're In

Facebook Groups could soon cost you.

While Facebook's overlord, Mark Zuckerberg, has maintained that "a version" of Facebook will always be free, we might finally get a version that won't be.

Long has Facebook tried to figure out new ways to monetise their service by introducing sponsored posts, ads in videos, smart tracking ads and even adding autoplaying video ads in your Messenger app (the audacity!). Largely, however, these costs haven't been transferred to the personal users of the social media site.

But, in a recent blog post, Alex Deve, the product director of the Facebook's Groups, announced that Facebook would be piloting the introduction of a subscription fee for users within certain groups.

This will give Group admins the option to charge their members for exclusive content and allow them to "deepen engagement with their members."

"We hear from group admins that they’re looking for ways to help them earn money to deepen engagement with their members and continue to support their communities," Deve wrote in the blog post.

"Subscription groups were created to make it easier for admins to provide these experiences with built-in tools, and to save them time so they can focus on offering members-only content."

Do promises mean nothing these days??

The trial is only in its early stages so if it turns out to be a "success", we can sleep safely for at least a year or so before it's rolled out everywhere.

"This subscription groups pilot is testing with a small number of groups across a range of interests who will share input and feedback along the way," Deve wrote.

"We'll continue to improve this experience to help admins offer more to their members and continue to invest in their communities."
