Are You Ready for Autoplaying Video Ads in Facebook Messenger? ‘Cos They’re Coming

Facebook has found yet another way to interrupt your experience.

If you’ve evacuated Facebook in recent months but found it hard to untether yourself from their (admittedly irresistible) free messaging and calling app, Facebook Messenger, we have some bad news.

A report from Recode indicates Messenger is about to debut auto-playing video ads, similar to the kinds of ads you might see on OG Facebook.

So, expect some additional annoying marketing messages to roll-up on you like:

Apparently, Facebook is running out of places to put ads on its regular app, hence the move to Messenger.

You may not have noticed ads on Messenger before, but they’ve been there for a while. However, the service had previously only used static ads embedded among your list of ongoing conversations.

Video ads began rolling out to select users earlier this week, and the man behind Messenger’s ad business told Recode he doesn’t believe they’ll turn off users, based on some tests.

You won't be able to turn off ads, but you'll be able to hide certain ads, report them, or manage your targeting preferences.

Anyway, you’ll be able to decide how annoying this all is when you start seeing the ads in your app over the coming weeks.
