‘Dungeons and Dragons’ Review: The Fun Fantasy Movie We Need RN

This new band of adventurers have rolled high on their performance check.
There’s been a lot of serious fantasy out there on our screens over the past few years, like Game of Thrones and The Witcher (just to name a few).
They’re dark, gritty and serious… but there hasn’t been anything for fantasy lovers that’s just plain fun.
Putting my love for the roleplaying game aside, seeing a dynamic variety of characters played by a star-studded cast in a fantasy world of an action-comedy film? I was sold.
Stranger Things has definitely brought the tabletop game back into the pop culture scene, so this movie is going to grab the attention of people of many ages!

You don’t need to be a fan of Dungeons and Dragons to enjoy the film. While this movie isn’t going to win any Oscars or doesn’t really break any new ground - it doesn’t need to.
It’s funny, filled with some awesome fight scenes and creatures – an adventure I think everyone of all ages will enjoy. It’s an easy watch.
Egdin and his barbarian companion Holga must create a team to help rescue Egdin’s daughter from the Lord of Neverwinter, Forge, and retrieve a long-lost relic with incredible power.
Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) makes a great lead, and I was surprised to see a decent amount of backstory to his character. It could have been easy for the characters to be played as their D&D class stereotypes, so I’m glad they fleshed out some of them.

I loved Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu) as the amateur sorcerer Simon, and Sophia Lillis as tiefling Doric was awesome, but Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and the Furious) as a barbarian didn’t seem to shine as bright as the rest of the cast.
While he does make a substantial appearance in the promotional posters for the movie, Bridgerton heartthrob Regé-Jean Page only joins the team for one small part of the journey, so don’t expect a lot of screentime.
Yeah, NGL - I was a little disappointed.

Hugh Grant (Love Actually) makes for such a fun villain –he’s still playing that bumbling personality he embodies for most of his iconic roles, but just evil and in fantasy attire.
I’ve heard this movie described as Guardians of the Galaxy in the Dungeons and Dragons world, and it pretty much hits the nail on the head.
