Dreamworld To Demolish The 'Thunder River Rapids' Ride After Tragic Deaths

An announcement has come that Dreamworld will demolish the Thunder River Rapids Ride, after an alleged malfunction resulted in four tragic deaths.

Deborah Thomas, chief executive officer and managing director of Ardent Leisure, said the park will permanently shut down the ride out of respect for the victims and their families, reports the ABC.

"The closure of the ride is the only respectful and appropriate course of action," said Ms Thomas in a statement.

Cindy Low, Kate Goodchild, her brother Luke Dorsett and his partner Roozbeh Araghi died after their Thunder River Rapids raft flipped over roughly a fortnight ago.

Plans have been made to create a permanent memorial for the victims. Thomas indicated this would be done as soon as appropriate, and that family members will be invited to help put it together.

A review into all Dreamworld and Whitewater World rides and operating systems has been launched by an independent engineering firm.

"In addition to these reviews, Dreamworld remains committed to working closely with the Workplace Health and Safety Queensland team," said Thomas in a statement.

"No ride at Dreamworld will operate until the Workplace Health and Safety Audit has been completed and unless it passes the multi-level internal and external review process."

Tom Tate, Gold Coast Mayor, said the park's reopening should not be rushed.

Regarding when he thinks Dreamworld should open its doors again, he said, "I would ask that they talk to the families and they get their okay from that."
