Johnny Depp And Amber Heard Are Getting A Divorce, And The Internet Blames Barnaby Joyce

We wouldn’t normally cover the salacious, personal details of a celebrity divorce, unless it specifically intersects with Australia’s biosecurity laws and impending elections. And this one, weirdly, does.

According to TMZ, Amber Heard has filed for divorce from her husband of 15 months, Johnny Depp.

It comes just weeks after the duo filmed an apology video to the people of Australia; the result of their seemingly-endless dog smuggling scandal.

Needless to say, the denizens of the Internet are putting the blame for the separation squarely at Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s feet.

Joyce spearheaded the campaign to bring Depp and Heard to court over their dogs' (Pistol and Boo) undocumented Oz excursion. Yesterday, Depp went as far as to say Joyce resembled an “inbred tomato”, while Joyce suggested he is now “Depp’s Hannibal Lecter.”

Still, when asked to comment on the divorce, Joyce offered the following: "In all seriousness, the one thing I will never revel in is any relationship breakdown, no matter what animosity that might be seen on the airwaves between Mr. Depp and myself.”

That cool head might partly be the result of a new, more distracting feud brewing between Joyce and Indonesia, after the Deputy PM suggested last night that Indonesia had intentionally sent over asylum seekers after Australia (under Labor) suspended live animal exports in 2011. (Yes, the transport of animals is one again the cause of consternation.)

He attempted to walk back the comments today, ABC News reports.

"I'm not saying that this caused the Indonesians to start sending people across, I never suggested that,” he said.

“But I did clearly suggest that it made it difficult, gave a real degree of difficulty in how we negotiate with Indonesia.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has also chimed in, adding emphatically, "there is no link between the Indonesian Government and people smuggling”.

How these stories ended up fused, we, as a nation, may never fully understand.
