The months leading up to Christmas are a busy time for businesses such as retail shops, delivery companies, restaurants and cafes. People spend more, end of year celebrations begin and shopping centres tend to get flooded pretty quick.

To allow businesses to meet this increase in demand, lots of them offer Christmas casual positions. 

These positions often last from October or November to early January or February, and can be perfect for high school or uni students looking for some extra income over the summer.

As lots of these businesses are getting ready to hire, now is a great time to explore potential opportunities and start applying. 

Australia Post.

Australia Post has started hiring numerous positions in prep for their busiest time of the year. 

Aus Post welcomes applicants aged 16 and over.

One of the available positions is a Seasonal Mail & Parcel Sorter. In this position, you’ll be working at a facility where you’ll be responsible for sorting parcels in preparation for delivery.

If you have a licence, they also hire van drivers, forklift drivers and truck drivers.

Roles tend to start throughout October and November, and may last until Christmas time depending on parcel volumes.

Amazon.

Amazon Australia is set to hire 3,000 seasonal workers across its fulfilment centres and delivery stations this holiday period.

They are also hiring Amazon Flex workers. This role is open to those 20 years or older, with a valid unrestricted Australian driver’s licence, and who own a qualifying vehicle and eligible smartphone. Amazon Flex delivery partners are able to earn extra money in their spare time by delivering packages to customers.

Amazon is searching for enthusiastic individuals who would like to help pick, pack and ship customer orders ahead of, and over, the holiday period.

Applications are now open in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Gosford and Geelong, with no previous experience required.

Which other places are hiring?

Other retailers that often hire Christmas casuals are larger businesses or chain stores.

Some examples include Kmart, H&M, JB Hi-Fi, Woolworths, Coles and Rebel.

Often, companies like these have their own careers portals, so it’s best to check their websites for any current and future opportunities and consider setting up job alerts where available.

Interested in an adventure or brand new experience? A lot of farms across Australia often need help with jobs like fruit picking or livestock management, with a lot of roles open to those with no experience.

Many people travel during the holiday season, leaving their houses and sometimes their pets behind. This leaves an opportunity for you to offer house sitting or pet sitting services.

Pet owners who are still around, but busy with festive commitments, might not have the time to take them for walks. You could offer dog-walking services to help.

Babysitting can also help families out during the busy season.

A quick Google search will show you apps that can connect you with people for these types of jobs. You can also ask friends, family or community groups. Another idea is to drop flyers in your neighbourhood or put up flyers at the local shopping centre or sports centre.
