Balancing physio studies and extra income 🚗

This article is presented in partnership with DoorDash.

On this episode of Dasher Stories (in partnership with DoorDash), we chatted with Marcus, a Physiotherapy student in his final year of studies in Melbourne.

Marcus has been Dashing for around a year, using the flexibility of the Dasher app to earn extra income while studying.

After getting his first car, a trusty Honda Civic, Marcus started looking for ways to help cover everyday costs.

"I got my first car and wanted some additional income," he told Student Edge.

After chatting with friends who had previously Dashed, he decided to give it a try and quickly discovered that it fit well around his university schedule.

When it comes to Dashing, Marcus prefers working in the evenings.

"I like it at night because it’s more busy, you get more orders, and I like driving at night. There's less traffic after work hours," he said.

Dashing across Melbourne's northern suburbs has also helped Marcus discover plenty of local food spots he might not have found otherwise.

"I've been to some restaurants that look amazing. I have actually tried a few after getting orders from them," he said, giving burger favourite 300 Grams a special mention.

One thing Marcus has learnt is that Dashing involves more than people might expect.

"It might be harder than you think. You have to navigate a lot of things at the same time.”

He went on to explain what it’s like juggling different tasks. There’s keeping up with customer communication, managing your route and sometimes handling multiple orders at once.

“It’s a bit challenging at times, but I’m pretty used to it already,” Marcus said.

For Marcus, the biggest advantage is flexibility. Being able to choose when he Dashes helps him balance study, social commitments and work throughout the week.

Looking ahead, he's putting some of his earnings aside and saving for future travel, including a potential trip to Vietnam with friends.

His advice for students considering becoming a Dasher?

"Give it a go. It's flexible, beginner-friendly and a good way to earn some extra income for daily expenses," he said.

i think this article shows how hard it can be for students to balance work and studying at the same time. i liked how Marcus found a way to earn money while still having time for uni and his social life. it also made me realise that having a flexible job can be really helpful when you have other things going on. but i also think jobs like this can be more difficult than they seem and people shouldnt just do it without thinking about the pressure and responsibility.
