Juggling Year 12, Domino's and Dashing 🍕

On this episode of Dasher Stories (in partnership with DoorDash) we chatted with Dylan. Based in the Sutherland Shire in Sydney, he's in Year 12 studying construction and music, all while working part-time at Domino's.

Somehow, he fits Dashing in around all of it.

"I juggle all that and do DoorDash. So yeah, quite busy at the moment," he told Student Edge.

Dylan has been Dashing for about four months, mostly in his Toyota Corolla, though he'll happily walk the close ones. He got started for a simple reason.

"I was just bored and just wanted to find a side hustle to make some money," he said.

"I saw that DoorDash would be a good side hustle. I know some people who did it and it's flexible. You just start whenever you want, finish whenever you want, accept or decline all the orders."

For Dylan, that flexibility is the whole point. When you press "Dash Now" you can set a time and extend it whenever you like, which makes it easy to fit around school, shifts and mates.

"Sometimes I'll do it before work. If I want to finish, I'll just finish, go home. If I want to stay out longer, I'll stay out longer."

Getting set up was straightforward too. After signing up for an ABN and passing a criminal record check, he completed the Dasher safety modules and was good to go.

"It was pretty easy. It did take maybe a week or so to get approved, but other than that, it was super easy. Anyone could do it."

To keep it all on track, Dylan lives by his calendar, blocking out time for work, school and hanging out with friends. The money helps fund petrol, food and future travel, and there's the odd bonus along the way, like the $150 he and a mate both pocketed through a referral.

Being on the road has its perks for a foodie, too, from Betty's Burgers to the small local cafes.

"The food always smells really good," he said. "It's definitely cool being a Door Dasher. You can smell the food and you can see the food and be like, that actually looks pretty decent."

His advice for anyone thinking about it?

"Just do it. It's easy. If I can do it, you can do it. It's flexible. You can make heaps of money off it while studying, having a part-time job."
