The Original “Blues Clues” Host Opens Up About Why He Suddenly Left the Show

Pass the tissues, please.

The OG host of kids TV show Blues Clues, Steve Burns, has solved one of the world’s biggest mysteries: where did Steve go?

Starting in 1996, Steve was the first host of Blues Clues, a show about a man and his cartoon dog Blue looking for clues and solving puzzles around his house. But in 2002, Steve suddenly decided to leave the show and handed Blue over to his brother Joe. Joe was great, but he was definitely no Steve.

Now, after all these years left wondering why he said goodbye—including rumours that he died in a car accident—Steve has broken his silence in a video put up on Nick Jr.’s Twitter, wearing the same green shirt and hat he did in the series.

Fair warning, you’re gonna feel some warm fuzzies inside.

“You remember how when we were younger, we used to run around and hang out with Blue and find clues and talk to Mr Salt and freak out about the mail and do all the fun stuff? Steve said.

Yes, I do remember Steve, we were so good at it!

“And then one day, I was like, ‘Oh hey, guess what? Big news, I’m leaving. Here’s my brother Joe, he’s your new best friend,’ and then I got on a bus and I left and we didn’t see each other for like a really long time? Can we just talk about that? Because I realise that was kind of abrupt.”

Damn straight it was abrupt.

As it turns out, Steve decided to go to college (uni in Australia).

“I just kind of got up and went to college. And that was really challenging by the way, but great because I got to use my mind and take a step at a time and now I literally am doing many of the things I wanted to do,” continued Steve.

“And then look at you, and look at all you have done, and all you have accomplished in all that time. And it’s just so amazing, right?

"We started out with clues and now, it’s what? Student loans, and jobs and families? And some of it has been kind of hard, you know? I know you know?”

Okay, pass the tissues. I didn’t expect this to get so real.

“I wanted to tell you that I really couldn’t have done all of that without your help. In fact, all the help that you helped me with when we were younger is still helping me today, right now.

"And that’s super cool. I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you. Ever. And I’m super glad we’re still friends.”

So, I didn’t expect to be crying about Blues Clues today, but that was so heartfelt and absolutely the pump up we all needed to keep pushing on.

While I compose myself, here are some of the best Twitter reactions.

There's nothing more to say really than, thank you Steve.
