Barb from "Stranger Things" Has a Rom-Com Headed to Netflix Called "Sierra Burgess is a Loser"

Stranger Things’ Shannon Purser has done a whole lot with very little.
Despite only having about 30 lines of dialogue in the hit show’s first season, her character Barb became an instant icon for the ‘supportive best friends’ of the world. Purser herself scored an Emmy nomination for her brief performance, and then scored supporting roles on both Riverdale and Rise.
Now, she’s getting her own rom-com.
Netflix today announced they’ll debut Purser’s first major movie, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, on 7 September.
The flick is reportedly a modern retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, a classic French play about a poet with a large nose who helps an inarticulate jerk romance the woman of their dreams. It’s already been remade a number of times—from Roxanne to Whatever It Takes—but this will be the first time with a graduate from the school of Stranger Things, so colour us intrigued.
This time around, the 'Cyrano' will be Purser’s character Sierra Burgess, a "loser" who teams up with the most popular girl in school to win over their respective crushes. What’s not yet known is if Sierra’s crush is also her cousin, as in the original play. Fingers crossed!
The flick also stars R.J. Cyler from Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
Given the success (on social media at least) of recent original Netflix rom-coms The Kissing Booth, Set It Up and Alex Strangelove, Sierra Burgess could be a biggie. There’s no trailer for the film just yet, but you can already add it to your Netflix List now.
Until then, Purser will continue to live her best life.
