The Teaser Trailer Has Just Dropped for the Upcoming “Backrooms” Movie

Who would’ve thought we’d get a whole movie from a 4chan thread?
The hype for this movie has continuously been growing since the very first announcement. Backrooms is an upcoming science fiction horror film, directed by YouTuber Kane Parsons (AKA Kane Pixel).
The movie is based off the urban legend and creepypasta of the same name that was made into a YouTube series called Backrooms by Kane.
What is the lore of Backrooms based off?
The Backrooms are actually a fictional location originally from a 2019 4chan thread. It’s one of the best known examples of the liminal space aesthetic that combines the creepiness of large empty spaces with the ominous feeling of no escape.
Between 2011 and 2018, a photo of a large, carpeted room with fluorescent lights and dividing walls had gone around on different message boards.
On May 12, 2019, an anonymous user started a thread on /x/, 4chan's paranormal-themed board, asking users to "post disquieting images that just feel 'off,'" posting to the thread with this photo.

Days later, it spanned a ton of people writing stories about the Backrooms and sharing them on Reddit, creating an ever-growing fandom.
What is the movie actually about?
With just the teaser trailer and poster released at the moment, there isn’t a ton of information beyond a simple premise.
After a therapist's patient goes missing into a dimension beyond reality, she has to enter the unknown to save him.
Based off the teaser trailer, it looks to have that same ominous creepy vibe that people have come to know and love from Kane’s previous work.
When is it scheduled to be released?
The initial release is set for 29 May 2026, however there is no concrete date for when the film will be released to Australian theatres.
We might have to hang on a bit longer but there’s no denying the excitement around this movie.
This also isn’t the first time that a YouTube has dipped their toes in the murky waters of horror movies with Markiplier’s Iron Lung that came out earlier this year and Bring Her Back as well as Talk to Me by YouTubers turned directors Danny and Michael Philippou.
Needless to say, it’s definitely interesting to see more feature length horror movies coming from non-traditional spaces.
If you’re keen to watch Backrooms and you’re after some movies with similar mysterious and ominous themes of dread to dig your teeth into while you wait, check out Skinamarink, It Follows, Cube, Vivarium or Pulse.
Plus, there’s heaps of analogue horror videos available on YouTube if that’s more your style like This House Has People in It. It’s a 2016 American found footage analogue horror that was posted to the Adult Swims YouTube channel.
It’s shrouded in mystery and will leave you feeling uneasy with a lot of questions that need to be answered.
