Indie Web Series “The Amazing Digital Circus” Finale Is Coming to a Theatre Near You

A massive win for the indie animation industry 👏 

Australian animation studio Glitch Productions and speciality theatrical distributor Fathom Entertainment, are bringing the finale of The Amazing Digital Circus to theatres across the world (currently including US, Canada, Japan, Australia and more) from 4- 9 June.  

The show has amassed a huge online following since the pilot episode was first released to YouTube in 2023 before joining Netflix in 2024 where it has surpassed more than a billion views.  

Where can I watch it in Australia? 

There will be multiple screenings across Event and HOYTS cinemas from the 7 to 9 June.

Why is this such a big deal? 

The theatrical release of The Amazing Digital Circus is a significant milestone for independent animation, showing a massive shift in how web-based content is consumed and appreciated. 

It just goes to show how independent, internet-native animation can compete with, or at least match, the huge popularity and quality of Hollywood productions. 

Glitch Productions is fully self-funded and they’ve created more than just the wacky 3D digital circus world.

What is the Amazing Digital Circus about? 

The Amazing Digital Circus is an animated psychological comedy web series that follows a group of humans trapped in a surreal, 90s-inspired virtual reality circus run by an unpredictable AI named Caine. 

This show is not without its endless amount of fan theories, predictions and questions as the whole series is shrouded in a lot of mystery. 

Despite the animation medium, this show has a lot of depth and heart as characters struggle with trauma and sanity, risking losing their minds and “abstracting” as they try to escape their confinement. 

The Amazing Digital Circus is primarily inspired by Harlan Ellinson’s 1967 sci-fi short story, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream which follows a similar plot of humans trapped and tortured by a sentient AI.

With the first eight episodes of the series available, The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act will be screening episode eight (currently available to watch) followed by episode nine – a new, hour-long series finale.

The Amazing Digital Circus Episode 9, "The Last Act," is the final episode, featuring a feature-length format where the circus has crumbled after Caine's disappearance. The cast confronts their past traumas and the bleak reality of their imprisonment, uncovering the truth about the Circus's history while deciding between escape or permanent adaptation. 

If you’ve read the short story this series is based on, you might have a bit of an idea where the ending could go but our theories for the finale are still up in the air.
