A House Targaryen "Game of Thrones" Prequel Is Reportedly in the Works

Hold onto your dragons, a prequel might be coming.

If you are one of the many people that felt personally victimised by the ending of Game of Thrones, you might be excited to know that another prequel is possibly in the works at HBO.

According to anonymous sources speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the script will be written by Ryan Condal (Colony) and GoT author George R.R. Martin. With a focus on House Targaryen, the story is set to take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It is reportedly based on George R.R. Martin’s novel, Fire & Blood, when dragons ruled Westeros.

Given the timeline, the prequel would track the beginnings and the end of House Targaryen. So basically, we will finally get to witness that massive train wreck unfold, and it will be glorious.

So, what's going on with the other prequels?

News of another Game of Thrones prequel isn't that surprising. In May, George R.R. Martin hinted in a blog post that fans should pick up their copies of Fire & Blood, so it's entirely possible that he was alluding to a House Targaryen prequel.

The author also confirmed that there are five different spin-offs in the works at HBO, with three moving forward. The first of these, rumouredly called The Last Night, will star Naomi Watts (21 Grams) and Miranda Richardson, who portrayed Rita Skeeter in Harry Potter. Created by Martin and Jane Goldman (Kingsmen), the series will chronicle the world's descent from the Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. It is the only spin-off so far to have shot a pilot episode, with the other two still in script-writing stages.

As per reports, the Targaryen prequel is not one of the previously reported prequels in the works. It's actually a new take on the world that was being developed by GoT fave Bryan Cogman, who confirmed earlier this year that the prequel he had been working on was scrapped.

However, fans really want this Targaryen one to be a thing.

HBO has declined to comment at this stage, so nothing is official yet.

The 2019 Emmy Awards are coming up on 22 September, and Game of Thrones has received 32 nominations. Ten cast members have been nominated, including Lena Headey for displaying excellent wine-sipping and balcony-staring efforts.
