Yubo Survey Confirms Gen Z Is Super Conscious About Sustainable Food Choices

We love a meatless Monday.

With the climate crisis looming and social issues making headlines so regularly, we all know Gen Z loves to do their bit for the planet and marginalised groups.

Just take a look at the School Strike 4 Climate rallies that occur every year.

It’s well known that we love a bit of zero waste content and giving vego food a try, but outside of attending rallies, signing petitions and sharing activism on social media, it seems that a lot of us are also making a large effort in our personal lives—particularly when it comes to sustainability.

For International Youth Day (today lol) social video live-streaming app for teens Yubo asked their users about sustainability, finding that Gen Z is more aware of our everlasting footprint on the world than ever before, and are starting with food choices to make a difference.

After surveying 1300+ young Aussies aged between 13 – 25-years-old, Yubo found that 84.2 per cent of Gen Z believe that it’s real important to be conscious and sustainable with our food picks.

On top of being conscious, 11.2 per cent identify as vegetarian or vegan, ‘cos animal agriculture—in particular the meat industry—uses a whole bunch of land, water, and contributes a lot of CO2 to climate change.

While only 11 per cent of gen Z identify as vego, almost three-quarters confirmed that we would try plant-based food options, especially if they were made more affordable and accessible.

When it comes to grocery shopping, young Aussies still prefer the big supermarket brands like Coles, Woolies and ALDI, but that’s mostly ‘cos smaller independent shops and local markets are kind of expenny.

Despite picking chain supermarkets, many of us do our best to bring reusable accessories when doing our weekly shop. In fact, 30 per cent of us use metal straws and reusable bags, as well as 7.5 per cent utilising a keep cup for our morning cuppa.

Yubo also found that while Gen Z are making conscious efforts, we still think that both individually and with our family or friends, we could be doing more for the environment overall.

If you’re wanting to do more both at home and in class, here’s some of our tips on staying sustainable.
