You Can Now File For Divorce Via Facebook

What's the opposite of a friend request?

A landmark ruling by a New York City judge has paved the way for divorce filings over social media.

According to the New York Daily News, Brooklyn woman Ellanora Baidoo has been granted legal permission to serve a divorce summons via Facebook’s private messaging system to her estranged husband. She is the first person in the world afforded the right.

Baidoo married Victor Sena Blood-Dzraku in 2009, though his refusal to participate in a traditional Ghanaian wedding ceremony in addition to their civil ceremony led to a dissolution of their relationship. You might say: "It's complicated."

The two never lived together, and only kept in touch by phone and, obviously, Facebook.

Without a fixed address or place of employment, she claimed she had no option but to serve divorce papers over social media.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Matthew Cooper has given Baidoo's lawyer the go-ahead to serve Blood-Dzraku “once a week for three consecutive weeks or until acknowledged” through private messaging.

Seems like his notifications will be going wild this month.
