A Change Is Gonna "Thumb": Facebook Is Introducing A 'Dislike' Button

Thumbs up for thumbs down. Facebook is developing a ‘dislike’ button.

It’s a move that should help end that awkward situation where you wind up clicking ‘like’ when you see a friend openly post some bad news (it was meant as a vote of support!) or after learning that a beloved actor has passed away (you only meant to honour their memory!).

Mark Zuckerberg announced the development during a Q&A.

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years," he said, addressing the obvious.

"Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it."

For those worried that their previously unliked – probably pun-heavy -status updates will suddenly become inundated with ‘dislike’ downvotes, Zuckerberg wants to assure this isn’t Facebook’s move into a more negative, Reddit-styled territory.

“What [users] really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” he clarified.

Though there isn’t an official launch date, it’s supposedly coming very soon.
