Wrap-Up Fridays: Selena, Harry Styles and Weird Al Yankovic Are Back

Wrap-Up Fridays: Selena, Harry Styles and Weird Al Yankovic Are Back

All the new music, TV, movies and more.

It’s another big week in new releases, with a swathe of music, new TV series and movies to keep your weekend busy.

Here’s our top picks of all the latest releases on a huge wrap-up Friday.

TV and Streaming.

A big drop this week is the premiere of Netflix’s new series, Blockbuster. The new sitcom is set in the world’s last remaining Blockbuster store, starring Randall Park (Jimmy Woo from the MCU) and Melissa Fumero (Amy Santiago from Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as they navigate a video rental store in a modern world.

The show’s received mixed reviews since it released on Thursday, but critics are generally praising Randall Park’s main character, Timmy.

One of the latest (and highly anticipated) streaming releases is Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a pseudo-biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) as everyone’s favourite parody singer.

We say “pseudo-biopic” because in true Weird Al fashion, the movie parodies his own life, and removes itself from reality.

Having already reached 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics are praising the film and Radcliffe’s performance.

“They’ve made a film that, especially in its superior second half, is as clever and enjoyably absurdist as Weird Al favorites like the food-themed “Beat It” parody, “Eat It,” and the Coolio riff “Amish Paradise”,” writes Brett Buckalew from AV Club.

You can catch Weird: The Al Yankovic Story on Roku.

Movies.

After a few hectic months promoting his last film Don’t Worry Darling, Harry Styles is back on our screens, this time with the period romance My Policeman.

The film follows the life of 1950s policeman Tom (Styles) as he navigates a love triangle and social conventions between his wife Marion (Emma Corrin, The Crown) and the museum curator, Patrick (David Dawson, Peaky Blinders), he falls in love with.

The film has divided critics, with some panning its simplicity and lack of insight, while others praise the emotionality and Styles’ performance.

Rafer Guzman emphasised his acting ability, writing “If anyone is still wondering whether the pop star Harry Styles can act, My Policeman should put all doubts to rest.”

My Policeman is available to watch now on Amazon Prime Video.

Also out this week is Armageddon Time, a coming of age story set in the 1980s with a huge cast, including Anne Hathaway, Anthony Hopkins and Jeremy Strong.

With its all star cast, exploration of heavy themes and reflection on society, Armageddon Time is already being touted as oscar material.

Armageddon Time is in theatres now.

Music.

The music on everyone’s mind this week has to be Selena Gomez – not only has she released a new track, “My Mind & Me”, but it’s come out alongside a documentary about her life with the same title.

Both the doco and the track are being celebrated online, as they feature her struggles with body image, mental health and celebrity status.

As for the track itself, it’s an emotional and orchestral exploration of Selena’s issues with public perception and mental health.

Get your 90s gear on, because yesterday marked 25 years since the release of the Spice Girls’ second album, “Spiceworld”.

To commemorate the anniversary, the Spice Girls have released “Spiceworld 25”, a deluxe edition of the original including live tracks, unreleased remixed and the fan-favourite track  “Step To Me”.
