“I want a job that allows me to travel,” is something we’ve all said at least once.

But finding said job which includes travel is harder than it looks.

If you’re looking for your next gig which could take you around Australia, there are loads of jobs within the Australian Federal Police (AFP) you might love.

We chatted to someone who works for the AFP and asked them where in Aus they’ve been able to travel because of their job.

From the top of the territory to the capital Canberra.

Jordan Taylor* who works for the AFP, was based in Brisbane, Queensland but didn’t stay there for long.

“When I first joined the AFP I was placed into a general Crime Operations team and was just excited to be sent to regional Queensland to assist with search warrants,” they said.

“As time went on I would often be asked to deploy interstate on complex jobs which required a large amount of police resources which was always exciting.” 

After that, they spent time in Broome and travelled to the Northern Territory to assist with the AFP’s COVID-19 response.

“I slept in cattle property homesteads and stayed at a disused gold mine in one of the most remote places in Australia whilst ensuring the safety of the Northern Territory,” they said.

What are some of the perks?

For Jordan, the travel is one of the biggest perks of the job.

“My dream job growing up was one where I would get paid to travel. I had no idea that I would find this in the AFP,” they said.

“I visit places I wouldn’t get access to if I wasn’t in the AFP. I absolutely love traveling and it always feels like a holiday being away despite at times working hard.

“Working on a computer never appealed to me, I enjoy the active nature of the role and getting to work outside of an office.”

And although the travel has been optional, it’s an opportunity Jordan is really glad they’ve taken. 

What AFP jobs are there which may include travel?

The AFP’s headquarters operate from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) but there are also five regional commands across other states and territories, and they operate in nine Australian airports.
