Will "Stranger Things" S3 Become an '80s Crime Comedy? Hopper Says Maybe

Get ready for more '80s nostalgia in the upcoming season of Stranger Things.

It's no secret that our beloved Stranger Things is littered with references to classic '80s pop culture, with many picking up on the obvious nods to The Goonies, Aliens, It and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

But Sheriff Hopper, played by David "Dad" Harbour, has told Variety that another (and very unexpected) movie will influence the third season: Fletch.

"The Duffers [Stranger Things' creators] are so specific each year with the movies," Harbour told Variety.

"Fletch is one movie we get to play around and have some fun with this season, which you wouldn't expect from Stranger Things and you wouldn't expect from the Spielberg universe and you certainly wouldn't expect from a darker season."

Fletch follows the story of a journalist who goes undercover to get the ultimate scoop. He uncovers a conspiracy after donning many different disguises. Think of Master of Disguise but set in the '80s.

Perhaps we'll get to see Sheriff Hopper undercover as an evil scientist or maybe Eleven will slip in as a new patient?

The next season will also see some more of angsty-teen Eleven who, true to being a 13 or 14-year-old, will probably rebel more against her new dad.

"Their relationship is going to get far more complex, because, you know, things happen to girls and boys when they're 13 and 14," Harbour said.

"A lot of changes go on in the body and in your social life, and I don't think he's going to handle watching her become a woman in front of his eyes very well. That's a horrifying thing for him—maybe even more so than fighting inter-dimensional monsters."

The third season is due to come out in mid-2019, so theorise away until then.
