When Will "Cobra Kai" Season 4 Be Released? Here's What We Know

We need answers.

If you spent the first couple of days of 2021 binge watching Season 3 of Cobra Kai on Netflix, you officially started the year the right way.

Well done.

Created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, Cobra Kai is based on the Karate Kid franchise and is set a whole 34 years after the original Karate Kid film.

It brings back Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) decades after their iconic fight at the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament.

The first two seasons of the show were initially released on YouTube Premium (or YouTube Red as it was previously known), but the rights to the show were acquired by Netflix and the first two seasons landed on the streaming service last year. 

Season 3 was always going to be a big season. After all, Season 2 ended with Robby (Tanner Buchanan) knocking Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) over a railing during the explosive school fight, cracking his spine and putting him in a critical condition.

Of course, we don't want to spoil too much for those of you who haven't quite finished the latest season. So, if you're in the middle of watching S3, tread carefully.

A large portion of S3 centred on Miguel's recovery. Miguel pulling through and learning to use his legs again came as no surprise, considering the season's teaser trailer showed the karate champ opening his eyes.

However, that doesn't mean there weren't a few other shocks this season. We learnt more about John Kreese's (Martin Kove) backstory—particularly his time spent as a Vietnam War veteran—and witnessed the Cobra Kai students become more ruthless than ever. 

In the shocking finale, things ended with Daniel and Johnny putting aside their differences (for now) to take on Kreese together. They've merged their dojos, Miyagi-do and Eagle Fang, to beat Cobra Kai at the All Valley Karate Tournament. 

If Daniel and Johnny's students win, Kreese will leave them all alone for good. Except, with Robby joining Cobra Kai, that's going to be pretty damn tough.

So, if you've finished the season and you're not sure what to do with your life anymore, you're probably wondering: What's next? 

Well, here's everything we know about Season 4 so far.

When will Season 4 be released? 

At this stage, no exact release date for Cobra Kai Season 4 has been confirmed. Fortunately, we know there is definitely a S4 'cos Netflix already renewed it back in October 2020.

Creators Hurwitz, Schlossberg and Heald recently gave GamesRader+ an update on how production is going. They revealed that the scripts are about 80 per cent done and that they're hoping to start shooting the show in the coming months.

"We're still figuring out some of the specifics, but the intent is for early [2021] to get back on set, with all the COVID protocols in place, and to get back to some karate ass-kicking in the valley," the creators told the publication.

Hurwitz has also previously said that he'd imagine Season 4 would land a year after Season 3. So, we could probably expect it to arrive on Netflix in January 2022 if production isn't delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

What will the plot be? 

Plot details for Cobra Kai Season 4 are being kept under wraps, but given the way S3 ended, it's likely that the upcoming season will focus on the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament. 

With Miyagi-do and Eagle Fan joining forces, we can probably expect to see Daniel and Johnny clashing over their different teaching styles as well. 

While it's not clear who will fight in the All Valley Karate Tournament, we're betting that Samantha (Mary Mouser), Miguel, Hawk (Jacob Bertrand), Tori (Peyton List), Robby and Kyler (Joe Seo) will all flex their karate skills.

Is anyone new joining the cast? 

Considering where we left our karate crew, we'd expect to see the main cast members return for Season 4. 

No new additions to the cast have been confirmed yet, but fans are speculating that Thomas Ian Griffith could return to the show as Kreese's friend Terry Silver, who appeared in Karate Kid 3. 

There's also no word as to whether Aisha (Nichole Brown) will return to the show in Season 4, after being absent from S3. 

Will Season 4 be the last season? 

Fortunately, it looks like the story definitely won't end with S4. In fact, the creators have teased many more seasons to come.

"We have an endgame in our heads. We've had one for quite some time, and it's not in Season 4. It's well beyond that. In our minds, we have seasons' worth of story that is necessary to tell before we get to that endgame," Heald told TVLine. 

At least we've got that good news to keep us going. Now, start adding—as Johnny would say—hash brown Team Cobra Kai to all your social media posts.
